NGMRSC glossary

Term Definition
code Rail height measurement.  The code value represents thousands of an inch.  Thus code 70 rail (HOn3) is 70 x 0.001" = 0.07" or approximately 1.8 mm high.  Code 75 rail (HOm) is 0.075" or approximately 1.9 mm high.  Code 80 rail (OO9 / HOn30 / HOe) is 0.08" or approximately 2.0 mm high.
DC Direct current model railway electrical supply and control system.  See Frogs and turnout wiring.
DCC Digital Command Control model railway electrical supply and control system.  SSee Frogs and turnout wiring.
Electrofrog PECO turnout category that has a metal conducting frog.  See Frogs and turnout wiring.
Frog

Frogs are the 'vee'-shaped part of a railway turnout where individual rails cross.  See Frogs and turnout wiring.

Gauge

Distance between rails.  NGMRSC offers track in 9 mm, 10.5 mm, and 12 mm gauges.

HOm HO (1:87) scale, 12 mm gauge track system representing metre or similar narrow gauge track
HOn3 HO (1:87) scale, 9 mm gauge track system representing 2'6" or similar narrow gauge track.  (See HOe.  PECO offer one product range serving OO9, HOn30, and HOe.)
HOn30 HO (1:87) scale, 10.5 mm gauge track system representing 30" or similar narrow gauge track.
Insulfrog PECO turnout category that has a plastic non-conducting frog.  See Frogs and turnout wiring.
HOe HO (1:87) scale, 9 mm gauge track system representing 2'6" or similar narrow gauge track.  (See HOn3.  PECO offer one product range serving OO9, HOn30, and HOe.)
OO9 OO (1:76) scale, 9 mm gauge track system representing 2'3" or similar narrow gauge track.  (PECO offer one product range serving OO9, HOn30, and HOe.)
Point British term for 'Turnout', the special track configuration that directs traffic to or from either of (usually) two routes.  Narrow Gauge Model Railway Supply Canada uses the term 'turnout' because of its mainly North American market.
Scale Ratio of model railway dimensions to corresponding prototype dimensions.  OO scale is 1:76.  HO scale is 1:87.
Sleeper British term for 'Tie', the transverse fixture supporting rails and maintaining of rail gauge (separation).  Model railway sleepers are usually molded plastic and may show simulated wood grain.  Narrow Gauge Model Railway Supply Canada uses the term 'tie' because of its mainly North American market.
Tie North American term for the transverse fixture supporting rails and maintaining track gauge (separation).  (See 'Sleeper').  Narrow Gauge Model Railway Supply Canada uses the term 'tie' because of its mainly North American market.
Turnout North American term for the special track configuration that directs traffic to or from either of (usually) two routes.  Narrow Gauge Model Railway Supply Canada uses the term 'turnout' because of its mainly North American market.  (The British term in 'point'.  An alternate North American term is 'switch'.)
Unifrog PECO turnout category that has an isolated metal conducting frog.  See Frogs and turnout wiring.
